Light clay as internal insulation. Clay insulation is placed as loose fill behind permanent or slip formwork. Permanent formwork can be made directly from a reed mat plaster base, clay boards, or timber boarding with a plaster base. In most cases, vertical rough-sawn squared timbers are installed as a substructure at centres of 30 to 45 cm. The reed plaster base is then fixed to these in 20 cm increments, while the cavity is filled with light clay at the same time.

When filling, make sure there are no voids. Compacting by tamping is not necessary; the material simply has to be installed without voids. The light clay is placed dry behind the plaster base and moistened layer by layer with a distemper brush or pressure sprayer. This dry method is also suitable for installation in winter. Drying times are considerably shorter, and as a rule the next stage of work, the further plastering, can follow within 3 days. The moisture of the plaster and the layer-by-layer moistening ensure that the clay in the mix develops sufficient bonding strength, that later settling of the insulation is prevented and that lasting contact with the external wall is ensured. Light clay can also be installed earth-moist without a plaster base. In this case, formwork is built and then removed again after installation. This is known as "slipform" or travelling formwork. The light clay then serves directly as the plaster base for the clay or lime base coat.
