Clay or lime paint: what to paint the clay plaster with?

In order to maintain the structural and climatic advantages of the clay plaster, the wall design should be finished with a non-toxic, vapor-permeable coating. We recommend clay and lime paints. The products of our manufacturers Conluto, SIO and Kreidezeit enjoy our complete confidence in terms of the harmlessness of their composition, are easy to work with and harmonize wonderfully with clay plaster (and have also proven themselves many times on our own construction sites).

Some natural colors are limited in their variety of colors. Although all natural colors can be mixed with each other and thus enable an unlimited color palette to be realized, precise documentation is necessary for a later reproduction of the exact color shade.

In the meantime, the manufacturer Auro offers natural colors in a large variety of colors (over 350 shades), which are produced in the company's own mixing center as required. Thanks to this mixing technique, reproducibility is possible at any time.

Clay paint - it couldn't be easier

Clay paint is not only easy to work with, it is also made exclusively from natural ingredients. The colors are created by adding clay and clay minerals; ultramarine blue is used for the blue tones. Natural colors create a pleasantly calm, harmonious and healthy climate in our rooms. The cloth-matt surface of a clay paint gives the room a subtle liveliness in the paintwork and does not yellow.

Apply clay paint with the paint roller, the glaze brush or by spraying onto the dry, clean, firm and sufficiently absorbent surface. Usually it takes two coats.

Lime paint - the right mixture

Only lime-based paints should be used in damp rooms. Lime paints are purely mineral and alkaline due to the lime content. Mold does not settle on alkaline substrates. Lime paints can be applied to a lime plaster without any problems. The binders of the casein colors are again based on plants and can tend to mold if the moisture is permanent.

Lime paint is available in many ready-made colors or it can be colored with lime-fast pigments according to your individual taste. Conventional paints often contain unhealthy, or at least questionable, ingredients and can reduce the moisture-regulating effect of clay plaster. All natural colors traded in Lehm-Laden are fully declared and absolutely harmless to health and building biology. Because of their harmless ingredients, natural paints ensure a healthy indoor climate. Lime paint has a fresh and clear odor.

Some natural paints are limited in their variety of colors. Although all natural paints can be mixed with each other and thus enable an unlimited color palette, precise documentation is necessary for a later reproduction of the exact color shade.

Silicate paints - naturally solid

Silicate paints are the most robust of the natural paints inside and outside. These are paints that use potassium silicate as a binder. They are also
called water glass colors or Keim colors (after the inventor Adolf Wilhelm Keim).

The silicate paints from our manufacturer SIO do not require any preservatives or solvents, which among other things leads to a comfortable, healthy room climate.

Silicate paints are highly opaque, open to diffusion, non-flammable and effective against the formation of mold. They are extremely weather-resistant and long-lasting and are often used as a coating on clay or lime plaster (especially in the preservation of monuments).Very strong colors can be produced with silicate paints.
