Spatterdash mortars are used to prepare substrates that are too smooth or non-uniform so that a uniform plaster build-up can be applied over the full surface. For example, HP 9 VM lime spatterdash mortar is used on sand-lime bricks to create a rough texture on the smooth masonry. The subsequent plaster can then be applied to the rough texture of the spatterdash. The substrate must be absorbent and free from dust, formwork oil and other release agents. Highly absorbent substrates must be sealed. Unsuitable surfaces (e.g. timber and iron components, smooth concrete, butt joints between building elements, Styrodur boards) must be bridged with a plaster base.

HP 9 VM consists of hydraulic lime and limestone aggregates, with additives to improve workability and adhesion, and is cement-free.
