Indoor climate with clay cooling and heating

Clay wall heating or ceiling heating systems can of course also be used for cooling if cold water instead of warm water is fed into the system. This creates surface cooling systems. Unlike conventional air-conditioning units, a surface cooling system in the wall or ceiling operates silently and without draughts.

For high cooling loads, e.g. for commercial applications or in Mediterranean regions, ceiling cooling systems implemented with specially treated climate elements are recommended. The core of the drywall system is the WEM climate element, a 25 mm thick clay board with integrated heating pipes. WEM climate elements are used to build wall and ceiling constructions that can both heat and cool.

Installation is simple: the climate elements are screwed onto flat substrates such as solid timber walls, timber cladding and board materials, or onto stud frame constructions. The areas not covered with wall heating panels are levelled with WEM clay building boards that contain no pipes. The entire surface is then skimmed with WEM clay finishing plaster and reinforced with glass-fibre mesh. The finished surface can then be painted, e.g. with WEM FarbTon clay paint.

With the WEM climate element, a wall heating system can be installed quickly and easily using dry construction. Compared with systems that are plastered, only very little water is introduced into the building fabric. Long drying times are eliminated.
