Clay building boards: drywall construction without plasterboard
Clay building boards are the eco-friendly alternative to traditional plasterboard. They can be used in interior fit-out work in much the same way as plasterboard, but offer the structural benefits of clay: vapour-permeable surfaces, moisture regulation, heat retention and a natural finish for Clay fine finish plaster, Clay paint or Deco clay facing plaster, Clay finishing compound or Clay smoothing plaster.
The major advantage is that, unlike thick wet plaster, the clay mixture is applied to the wall in the form of ready-made panels. This saves drying time and makes clay building panels particularly suitable for renovation projects, timber construction, loft conversions and eco-friendly drywall constructions.
What are clay building boards suitable for?
Clay panels are used indoors for wall and ceiling structures. They are particularly suitable when drywall installation needs to be carried out quickly, but the structure must remain natural and vapour-permeable.

Which clay building board is the right one?
The most important decision is: ease of processing or as much storage capacity as possible?
Light clay panels for example, hemp-clay building boards are particularly practical for walls, ceilings and sloping roofs. They are easier to handle and are well suited if you are looking for an eco-friendly plaster base of moderate weight.
Heavy clay panels add more mass to the room. This improves heat retention, sound insulation and protection against summer heat – making them particularly suitable for high-quality interiors, timber construction and refurbishments where greater comfort is required.
Processing and surface structure
The installation process is similar to that used in drywall construction: clay building boards are screwed or stapled onto suitable substructures or, depending on the system, glued to full-surface substrates. Services can be routed behind the boards, as in drywall construction. The boards are installed in a pattern; depending on the type of board, they can be cut to size using a cutter, jigsaw or hand-held circular saw.
After assembly, joints, screws and fixing points are filled with Clay adhesive and reinforcing mortar . This is usually followed by a full-surface reinforcement layer using clay adhesive and reinforcement mortar, and Glass mesh. After that, the area can be further finished with Clay fine finish plaster, Deco clay finishing plaster, Clay paint or Brush applied clay plaster .
The result is a completely natural drywall construction: board, reinforcement, clay finish – without the typical plasterboard look.

How heavy is a clay panel?

Lightweight clay building boards are easier to work with; the conluto hemp-clay building board, for example, weighs approx. 10 kg/m² at 14 mm and approx. 15 kg/m² at 22 mm. Heavy clay building boards add more mass to the wall structure and can therefore improve heat retention and sound insulation, but are more difficult to transport and install.
What is the bulk density of a clay building board?
The bulk density varies depending on the manufacturer, thickness and composition. The conluto lightweight hemp-clay building board falls within bulk density class 0.7. This means it combines relatively easy installation with the structural benefits of clay in interior construction.
