Clay bricks: a natural building material for walls, ceilings and timber-framed structures
Clay bricks are the right choice when you want natural building materials to be not only visible but also tangible. They provide thermal mass to a room, help regulate humidity and enhance comfort in older buildings, half-timbered houses, timber-framed structures and interior fit-outs using natural building materials.
Typical applications include infill for half-timbered structures, internal walls, cladding, floor supports and dry-stacked walls. Depending on their bulk density, size and application class, clay bricks are suitable for a range of purposes – from lightweight infill to heavy thermal mass.

Which clay brick is the right one?
The most important decision is: light or heavy?
Heavy clay bricks add a great deal of mass to walls or ceilings. They are particularly suitable when the focus is on heat storage, sound insulation and creating a sense of tranquillity in a room.
Lightweight clay bricks are lighter and, depending on the construction, may be a sensible choice if the aim is to reduce weight or achieve better insulation. They are the standard choice for infilling external half-timbered walls.
Processing and assembly
Depending on the application, clay bricks are either laid in a wall or stacked dry. When laying a wall, it is important to ensure the joints are fully filled so that the surface is stable and even. Clay mortar is generally used for clay brickwork.
In the case of half-timbered infill, the bricks must be selected to suit the moisture conditions and laid correctly. With stacked walls or ceiling infill, the main aim is to incorporate thermal mass – often without using wet mortar and therefore without long drying times.
Further development
Clay brick surfaces can be left exposed or finished with a suitable clay rendering system. For rendered surfaces, depending on the substrate, Lehm-Unterputz, Lehm-Oberputz, Lehm-Feinputz or Lehmfarbe are an option.
This results in a wall structure that is natural throughout: from the stone, through the mortar, to the finished surface – vapour-permeable, capillary-active and suitable for renovation and new-build projects using natural building materials.
