Making Hikizuri plaster

A special trowel for traditional applications: this trowel is a tool for the Hikizuri finish, a classic Japanese style of wall design in which the lime or clay plaster is not applied flat but in irregular small horizontal waves. The steel of this trowel is not hardened and is therefore comparatively soft. For this reason, the trowel is made from thick material and is correspondingly heavy. The relatively small (180 mm in length), slightly convex blade has a pointed end and is fitted with the traditional Japanese handle, whose shank is gripped between the index and middle fingers, allowing very good handling.
