Joint sealing against wind and cold

Hemp caulking cord is a sealing cord for sealing joints and gaps. It can be used between timber and masonry, or in timber framing between the infill panel and the beam. Hemp expands and compresses very well. This compensates for movement in the building materials, and the joint remains permanently insulated.

When densely packed, hemp has a very high airflow resistance, producing an almost airtight yet capillary-active and vapour-permeable joint. The masonry joint or window connection sealed with hemp can then be plastered with a lime plaster or clay plaster. To do this, the flanks must be coated with the hemp-clay paste and the joint sealing packed firmly.

It is important to allow for the joint at the planning stage. It must be possible to pack the joint using a caulking iron, a filling knife or a narrow wooden wedge. The minimum width should therefore be 5 mm. For joints over 15 mm, the caulking fibre is recommended. This is also made of hemp and is somewhat coarser. For installation, the hemp sealing cord is pressed into the joint using a caulking tool.

Filling the joint of a normal-sized window that is easy to reach takes only about 15 minutes.
A 10 kg box is sufficient for approx. 300 linear metres; when firmly packed, you should allow for 200 kg/m³ of insulation material.
