Casein
0,5 kg
in powder form, insoluble in water.
As a binder for example for wall paints.
Casein is a protein component of milk.
Dried, in powder form, it is insoluble in water. Only when broken down with alkalis (e.g. soda or hydrated lime) does it become water-soluble and can be used as a binder, e.g. for wall paints.

Guideline recipe for casein:
Mix 500 g casein powder into 2 litres of cold water until free of lumps
90 g Soda dissolve in ½ litre of hot water and stir thoroughly into the casein slurry.
Leave to stand for two hours, stir well and dilute with approx. 20-25 litres of water.
Important note: The mixed casein solution must be used on the same day. Under no circumstances use casein solution that smells bad or putrid: risk of long-lasting odour problems even after drying!
