The paints and plasters in common use today are often harmful to the environment and to health. Traditional recipes, some of them centuries old, offer a sensible alternative. They produce results that are just as durable as, or longer-lasting than, conventional ready-mixed products, they are simple and effective to apply and, above all, free from harmful substances. The book offers a rich collection of time-tested and newly proven recipes: from cow-dung sealing primer and traditional beer glaze to a wide variety of casein paints and slaked lime or silicate paint coatings. It explains the principles behind their production and application, describes how the work is carried out by hand and uses many examples to illustrate the building-physics interactions. Precise recipes, practical instructions, numerous tables and a detailed list of raw materials make the book an indispensable aid for all DIY enthusiasts.
