What is fine clay plaster suitable for?
Fine clay plaster is a fine-textured plaster finish for natural interior walls. It is used when the substrate is already level and a smoother, more even surface is required.
Typical applications:
- smooth surfaces on Clay undercoat plaster or Clay finish coat plaster
- Coating of clay building boards following appropriate preparation
- surfaces ready for application of clay paint or clay render
From a technical perspective, fine clay plaster lies between finishing plaster and skim coat: it is finer than traditional finishing plaster, but not as thin or smooth as clay skim coat for Q4 surfaces. Thin-coat plasters are usually applied at a thickness of around 3–5 mm. Fine plaster is therefore the right choice for refined yet naturally textured surfaces.

Fine clay plaster is applied in a thin layer to a solid, clean and sufficiently level substrate, either by hand or using a machine. Depending on the desired effect, the surface is treated with smoothing trowel, sponge board or grating board .
Using the right tool produces fine, smooth surfaces that can be further shaped once dry. For high-quality visible surfaces, it is worth creating a test area, as the tool, water flow and timing of the finishing process have a significant impact on the final appearance.
