Lime skim plaster: the perfect trowel-applied plaster for fine, smooth or decorative surfaces in your interiors

Lime filler for smooth surfaces and creative decorative techniques

Lime skim coats are fine-grained lime plasters optimised for trowelled surface finishes. You can use them both in the restoration of old buildings and in new builds. Whether you want to plaster your wall smooth and even or create decorative trowel techniques: our lime skim coats allow for a wide range of applications. On the one hand, you can use a lime skim coat to plaster a simple smooth surface that is subsequently painted or wallpapered. On the other hand, there are lime skim coats that you can tint with pigment, mix with effect aggregates or sand in order to create your very own individual wall design: with trowelling and wiping techniques, you can make every wall unique. Before you buy lime skim coats at Lehm-Laden, describe your building project to us and we will advise you in detail on the various products.

Substrate preparation and application of lime filler and lime skim coat

A lime plaster or a lime-cement plaster is recommended as a substrate for lime skim coats or lime finishing plasters. Substrates unsuitable for pure lime plasters (e.g. those containing gypsum) must be pre-coated with plaster bonding primer. As wallpaper paste can never be removed completely, such surfaces must be pre-treated with Naturkalk-Grundierung (lime primer) to achieve a high-quality finish. The lime skim coats can be applied both by hand and with all standard plastering machines. As lime finishing plasters dry quickly, rapid application is recommended. Most lime skim coats are applied in several coats, wet-on-damp, and then trowelled smooth. All lime skim coats naturally share the positive properties of lime plasters: they are vapour-permeable, contribute to a balanced indoor climate and reduce the risk of fungal growth and mould. The lime skim coat ‘Crealime’ makes very exclusive wall designs possible, as you can mix it with pigments or effect aggregates and sand the troweled surface by machine or by hand. To make lime sandable, however, it needs greater strength, which in this product is achieved through a minimal addition (> 5%) of white cement. This small amount reduces the indoor-climate properties of pure lime plasters only very slightly.
