Conluto rammed earth

Rammed earth is used for wall elements or rammed earth floors. Its great advantage is its high weight. Rammed earth is one of the heaviest building materials. This makes it the perfect heat store for solar energy or as a temperature-controlled building component. The use of rammed earth in combination with a wood-burning stove or component temperature control is aesthetically pleasing and makes perfect sense from an energy perspective.

Rammed earth is a construction method that requires some experience. The formwork used must be extremely stable. Formwork from building construction or concrete construction is usually used here. Rammed earth is approved as a load-bearing component when professionally executed.

Tamped clay is a ready-mixed compound that complies with the clay construction rules (3.9) of the German Clay Construction Association (Dachverband Lehm). It is made from mixed-grain to stony building clay with a binding strength of over 80 g/cm³ and mineral additives consisting of coarse sand, gravel or grit. Grain size: 0-8 mm. The bulk density is approx. 1700-2200 kg/m³.

Processing for rammed earth walls

The rammed earth is placed in layers of approx. 10-15 cm in a suitable formwork (usually prefabricated formwork) and compacted mechanically. Commercially available, large-area formwork systems and sliding formwork, as used in concrete construction, can be used as formwork.

Manual tamping devices, as well as electric or pneumatic compactors, can be used to compact the clay layers. The compacted rammed earth is dimensionally stable and can or should be removed from the formwork immediately so that the drying and hardening process can begin right away. Important: The consistency of the rammed earth must be checked before work begins.
