Japanese Plasterer's Hawk
The wooden plastering hawk is used to carry and hold plaster and mortar. The plaster is then applied from the wooden hawk to the wall with another trowel.
The wooden board is held in the left hand, while the right hand applies the plaster to the wall. The shape of the board and the handle are very ergonomically designed. Even larger quantities of plaster can be held securely for long periods without fatigue and without twisting the wrist or hand.
The mortar board is traditionally made of wood to protect the trowels. If the board is softer than the trowels, they are spared, which is particularly worthwhile with Japanese forged trowels.
The board can be set down when fully loaded without spilling plaster or mortar.
