Booklet on the works of Irmela Fromme
With the fourth brochure in the series, entitled "Clay and Light, Structure and Colour – On the Aesthetics of Clay Surfaces", the Clay Museum pays tribute to the work of Irmela Fromme. The 48-page brochure, richly illustrated, provides an overview of her work.
Taking clay and its colours as a starting point, she presents coloured wall designs in private and commercial interiors.
With this series of publications, the Clay Museum honours individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to clay as a building material.
Irmela Fromme was one of the first women in the emerging clay building trade in the 1980s. Born in Bremen in 1952, she always took unusual paths in acquiring the art of clay building, away from conventional training routes. She learned on building sites in collective structures and through her own experiments and that is how she still happily passes on her knowledge and skills today, on hands-on community building sites and on-site courses.
She is a lecturer at the European Training Centre for Earth Building and author of, among other works, the standard reference “Lehm- und Kalkputze” (Clay and Lime Plasters). Since 1986 Fromme has been a self-employed craftswoman in earth building; from 1992 she increasingly specialised in coloured clay plasters and fine plasters.
