Lehmbau Regeln Begriffe – Baustoffe – Bauteile
The 3rd, revised edition of the Lehmbau Regeln (German clay building rules) reflects the current state of development in clay construction since the rules were first published in 1999.

This edition, too, has been included in the Model List of Technical Building Regulations of the Deutsches Institut für Bautechnik Berlin and has thus been recommended to the federal states for introduction under building regulations. This has since taken place in most federal states. The individual clay building materials (such as rammed earth, cob and straw clay) are explained in a clear and easily understandable way, and instructions for testing and building with the material are provided, thus enabling professional application and execution.
Building regulations for earth construction To promote and facilitate the use of clay as a building material, the Dachverband Lehm (German Clay Building Association) is committed to developing new products, processes, techniques and constructions and to maintaining the quality of clay as a building material. In 1999, we therefore published the »Lehmbau Regeln« (Earth Building Rules) – the first technical rules in the European Union based on the current state of the art. The »Lehmbau Regeln« set out specific building regulations for earth construction, which had been lacking in Germany since the corresponding DIN standard was withdrawn in 1971. The ARGEBAU Technical Committee on Building Standards has decided to include the »Lehmbau Regeln« in the Model List of Technical Building Regulations.
The “Lehmbau Regeln” have now been adopted by the building control authorities in 11 federal states. The “Lehmbau Regeln” document the current state of building with clay in Germany. Starting with definitions of terms, they cover the testing of building clay, the composition, use and testing of clay building materials, the design and construction of clay building components, as well as plaster systems and drywall construction with clay building materials. The final chapter summarises material and component values (including sound insulation and fire protection). This project was funded by the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt (German Federal Environmental Foundation).
