Straw as a building material has a long tradition in our region in the form of thatched roofs and clay-straw timber-framed houses. In recent years this fast-growing and easy-to-work material has been rediscovered as a building material with good thermal insulation properties, available inexpensively straight from the field in the form of large-format high-density bales.
The first low-energy houses using straw-bale construction are being planned and test buildings have been erected. In their book, the authors describe the origins of building with straw, present proven building forms and construction methods, and also discuss the building-physics properties. They report on test results and research and provide a detailed overview of the buildings constructed in recent years. With numerous illustrations, a comprehensive list of further reading and addresses of organisations and companies.
