An important contribution to social change

Using building materials made from fast-growing plants is a great opportunity to store a large amount of CO2 directly and thus counteract climate change. The 50 bio-based buildings presented in this book (houses, schools, commercial buildings, infrastructure projects, etc.) were selected from 226 submissions by the jury of the FIBRA Award, the world's first prize for contemporary plant-fibre architecture. Made from bamboo, straw, reed, palm leaves, bark, North Sea or Andean grass, or even from fungi and living plants, these inspiring examples from 45 countries promote the use of abundant, plant-based, low-cost materials that require little energy to process.

    About the author:

Dominique Gauzin-Müller has published 16 books on nature-oriented architecture and urban planning. She is an honorary professor of the UNESCO Chair "Lehmarchitektur, Baukultur und nachhaltige Entwicklung", coordinator of the TERRA and FIBRA Awards and curator of the travelling exhibition associated with this book.

The FIBRA Award is supported by amàco, a research and experimentation centre that investigates clay and plant fibres in their simplest and purest form. Amàco enhances their potential by asking how we want to build and inhabit the world in future, thereby promoting the construction of buildings that respect people and their environment.
