KREIDEZEIT Tadelakt is a mineral, waterproof polished plaster made in the traditional Moroccan manner for interior walls. The two-coat application is polished with smoothed stones in circular movements – this creates the characteristic slightly cloudy appearance and the warm, velvety feel.

Tadelakt is water-resistant; treatment with an olive-oil soap, which reacts with the fresh lime, additionally makes the surface water-repellent (not waterproof). This makes Tadelakt suitable for decorative surfaces in splash zones, but not for showers, washbasins or bathtubs, and not for floors. Tadelakt is a demanding technique and requires craft experience.

Properties

  • purely mineral dry mortar, cement-free
  • Colour: white, can be tinted with KREIDEZEIT pigments
  • vapour-permeable: sd value < 0.1 m (DIN EN ISO 12572)
  • no plastic content
  • odourless once cured
  • waterproof; additionally water-repellent when treated with smoothing soap
  • strongly alkaline (fresh application pH > 12.5)
  • resistant to soiling (not grease-repellent)
  • vegan

Suitable substrates

Ideally suited: masonry with at least 1.5 cm of sound, untreated hydraulic lime or lime-cement plaster. On gypsum/lime-gypsum plaster, concrete, plasterboard, gypsum fibreboard, Wedi and fibre cement boards after priming and an intermediate coat of lime bonding plaster (on boards with embedded glass-fibre mesh). The surface must be dry and rough – not on smooth or permanently damp substrates.

Use & Application

Mixing: Stir in 0.25 l of water per kg of powder, leave to stand for 30 minutes, then stir again. Use mixed Tadelakt within 8–10 hours.

Substrate: Round off external corners (no corner beads), remove sinter skin and binder-rich surface layers, pre-wet the substrate.

Application: Two coats. Once the surface has begun to set, polish it with smooth polishing stones in circular movements to create sheen and a clouded effect.

Soaping: Treat with olive oil soap; it reacts with the fresh lime to form a water-insoluble lime soap and makes the surface water-repellent.

Use: In heavily used areas, tadelakt develops signs of wear over time. Areas that stay wet for longer darken temporarily and lighten again as they dry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use tadelakt in the shower?
Yes, for decorative surfaces in splash zones. Tadelakt is not intended for areas that are directly and permanently exposed to water, such as shower recesses, washbasins and bathtubs.

Do I need experience?
Yes. Tadelakt is a demanding technique. For a good result, we recommend a training course or an experienced applicator; KREIDEZEIT can put you in touch with contacts.

Why do wet areas turn darker?
Where Tadelakt stays damp for longer, it absorbs water and temporarily darkens. The surface lightens again as it dries – this is normal.

On which substrates can I apply Tadelakt?
Ideally on sound, untreated lime or lime-cement plaster (min. 1.5 cm). On other substrates after priming and an intermediate coat of lime bonding plaster. The surface must be rough and dry.
