Super-light, compression-resistant, pest-resistant, frost-, heat- and water-resistant, capillary-breaking: Foamed glass gravel is the ideal insulation material for the ground-contact areas of a house or beneath a vegetated roof.

Production could hardly be simpler. All that is needed is waste glass, usually window glass, which is foamed under heat and breaks into cubes as it cools. Neither production (always assuming the use of electricity from renewable energy sources), nor installation, nor the installed layer emits pollutants. All these properties make foam glass gravel a good alternative for perimeter insulation in the plinth and foundation areas of buildings, and one that is also recommended from a building-biology perspective. Foam glass gravel is extremely easy to install, as it is placed as loose fill and compacted. Because the gravel layer consists of many cubes, no frost-induced cracks can form. Foam glass gravel absorbs virtually no water and is therefore weather-resistant. As the gravel cannot transport water by capillary action, it also prevents the risk of rising damp from the ground. Its angular shape even has a stabilising effect. It forms no thermal bridges and can neither rot nor release chemically questionable fibres or particles into the soil.
