Wood fibre insulation boards are easy to install indoors, outdoors or under the roof. They differ in thickness and composition and are thus optimised for their respective applications; some of them, for example, contain water-repellent additives.

These wood softfibre boards work perfectly with clay plaster : a clay base is needed to bond them to the existing wall, and the subsequent plaster is ideally also clay. In its various consistencies and properties, clay therefore serves here as adhesive, surface finish and moisture buffer, as this building material can draw moisture from the room air and the timber-frame beams and release it to the outside. For tight-fitting installation, some of the boards are tongue and groove. The walls on which these insulation boards are to be used must be flat and even, as wood softfibre boards have very little flexibility. This requires some careful preparation, possibly even thick layers of levelling plaster. The reason for this is that no voids whatsoever may form during installation, so the boards must be in full contact with the wall. The room air condenses in voids, and mould can develop. The boards, which can be cut to size as required with a hand saw or circular saw, are bonded to the flat wall in a bed of clay and additionally secured with insulation fixings. The flatter the wall surface, the easier it is to fit the insulation boards. It is common practice to apply two coats of clay plaster to the insulation boards. A clay reinforcing mortar together with a reinforcing mesh is very well suited for the first clay coat. This gives you a firm surface. However, it is also possible to embed the reinforcing mesh in a standard base plaster . Tip: the internal insulation boards are much easier to plaster after priming with hemp-clay bonding plaster. Incidentally, wood fibre insulation boards do not consist exclusively of wood: the wood softfibre boards, which, interestingly, are firmer and more solid than the wood fibre boards, contain an adhesive, whereas the fluffy wood fibre boards require a so-called support mesh for their internal cohesion, which is currently made exclusively from plastic.
