Lime putty is produced by maturing quicklime for months or years after it has been slaked with water. Over time, the lime pit produces lime putty, which has a smooth and fine consistency and serves as a basic ingredient for various lime building materials. When the pulpy marsh lime is mixed with plenty of water, a lime colour with high white opacity is created. The viscous mash, which has matured in the depths, is mixed with sand and processed into lime plaster or mortar. Sintered water also forms on the surface of the lime pit, which is occasionally used in restoration and monument conservation.

You can buy lime putty in the clay shop either as ready-mixed colours or plasters, or you can apply quicklime yourself to make high-quality quicklime products later. Plasters and paints made from lime putty are characterised by their smoothness and fine texture. Particularly glossy, smooth surfaces can be achieved with lime putty. Of course, they are equally suitable for interior and exterior use and are used both in new builds and in the professional renovation of old buildings. Like all lime building materials, they also have the properties typical of lime: they are open to diffusion and moisture-regulating, non-combustible and harmless to allergy sufferers, antistatic and anti-mould, making them particularly suitable for damp rooms and even for mould remediation. As lime paint and plaster not only keep mould away, but also bugs, lime is the building material of choice for the walls of goat or chicken coops. All products made from lime putty offered in clay shops are free from synthetic binders and pigments or other unnatural or even harmful additives and are therefore highly recommended from a building biology perspective.
