Clay plaster has many advantages as a building material: In particular, the indoor air humidity is positively influenced by the use of clay plasters. Excess moisture in the room air is quickly absorbed by a clay plaster, stored and later released back into the room air. In timber-framed buildings, Conluto clay can help protect the wood; the low compensating moisture keeps a beam that is wrapped in clay permanently dry. This property also helps in other buildings. For example, short-term fluctuations, such as those caused by cooking or heating, can be easily compensated. Even when used in bathrooms, this plaster can contribute to a more positive indoor climate as long as the clay does not come into direct contact with water. A clay plaster thus also helps to reduce the likelihood of mould growth. Clay minerals also have the property of effectively binding foreign substances, pollutants and odours. The air in the room is thus purified in several ways by the clay plaster. 

Depending on the clay plaster, the material can be applied to different substrates. As a general rule, coarser plasters are used on uneven substrates as  clay undercoat plaster to achieve an even surface, while finer plasters are used as finishing plasters, which can then be decorated or painted in colour, for example with clay paint.
